Gomoku (5 in a Row) is a wormy adaptation of the real life board game Gomoku (known as 5 in a Row). The challenge is to make "5 In A Row", placing girders, and using a major board with 361 intersections (19x19). The differences from its simpler variant, 4 in a Row, are: it's permitted to put the pieces anywhere, and overlines doesn't count as victory (no more than 5 pieces must form the winning line).

Gameplay variations and their rules

There are two best known game modes. Read their rules below:

Simple mode

In the simple mode, both players simply place 1 piece per turn until one reaches the goal.

  • The goal is to form a consecutive line of no more than 5 pieces, without overlines. The lines can be arrenged either diagonally, vertcally or horizontally.
  • Each player will place 1 girder at a time, in any of the 361 board intersections. Whoever begins will always play placing vertical girders and the following player always placing horizontal girders.

Advanced opening with "Swap" procedure mode

In the mode used on a professional level, called "Swap": players have the option to swap their pieces, making a series of special movements in the opening. This method was created to prevent the first player from having the advantage, mathematically proven, of always winning.

  • Player 1 will open with Girder Starter Pack placing 3 girders in his turn, leaving the two extra ones out of the board. The order to follow is vertical girder, horizontal girder, vertical girder and the player will not do it anywhere at any direction it desires.

  • Player 2 now has three options for its first move:
    • Option 1: reject the swap.

The player goes on with horizontal girder for the rest of the round. The other player follows it with vertical girder.

    • Options 2: accept the swap.

The player skips the turn and stay with vertical girder while its challenger becomes horizontal girder and plays that.

    • Option 3: cede the swap.

The player uses only 2 girders from its Girder Starter Pack in this order: horizontal girder, vertical girder. And, now it's Player 1 who decides to reject or to accept the swap according with the previous options.
