The Worms series of games has a notion of "soundbanks", which allows players to customize their worm teams by assigning them a set of sounds (called a "soundbank"), either from a collection included with the game, or creating a custom soundbank from player-specified sound files.
Contents
Soundbank file format
Soundbank files are standard LPCM RIFF WAVE files (extension .wav). When creating soundbank files they should be saved or converted to 16 bit signed or 8 bit unsigned format with a frequency up to 48kHz. The channel layout can be mono or stereo.
Soundbank sounds and meaning
This is a list of sound files and descriptions used in the 2nd-generation of the 2D series.
The descriptions are taken from the Soundbank Editor (specifically, the names.wdb file). Some of these sounds aren't used (see below), some are used incorrectly. Some of these descriptions are inaccurate or too unspecific.
Filename | Description from names.wdb | Notes |
---|---|---|
Boring.wav | Phrase used when worm does something boring. | Plays when an enemy worm's turn timer hits zero. Also plays for a random team when a game ends in a draw. |
Bungee.wav | Used when Worm performs Bungee move. | Plays when a worm drops off a ledge and activates the Bungee. |
Byebye.wav | Used when a Worm dies. | Plays during the death animation. Same as "Ohdear.wav". |
Comeonthen.wav | Phrase used to tell you to hurry up! | Plays if there is no player input for a few seconds, after initial input. Same as "Hello.wav". |
Dragonpunch.wav | Punch sound effect. | Plays when Fire Punch is used. |
Excellent.wav | Phrase for an excellent shot. | This sound and three others have never worked as intended by Team17, and used to play in near-arbitrary circumstances. These sounds were disabled in 3.6.29.0, since fixing the bug would have changed the gameplay too much by causing the sounds to play too often, often inappropriately. |
Fatality.wav | Phrase for when a worm has just died. | Plays only when an enemy worm has died by falling into the water. |
Fire.wav | Worm says, "Fire!" | Plays when firing a launchable weapon. Same as "Watchthis.wav". |
Fireball.wav | Fireball sound effect | Plays when Dragon Ball is used. |
Firstblood.wav | Worm says, "First Blood" when killing its first victim. | Plays for the attacking team when the first damage of the match is dealt. Only plays once, for one team. |
Flawless.wav | Worm says, "Flawless Victory" when winning a game without losing a worm or energy. | |
Grenade.wav | Worm says, "Grenade!" when a grenade lands nearby. | Similar to "runaway.wav", "Takecover.wav", and "Whatthe.wav", but only plays if the explosive is a Grenade or a Holy Hand Grenade. |
Hello.wav | Worm says, "Hello" | Plays if there is no player input for a few seconds, after initial input. Same as "Comeonthen.wav". |
jump1.wav | Sound for jumping in the air. | Forward jump |
jump2.wav | Sound for jumping in the air (2). | Backwards jump or vertical jump |
illgetyou.wav | Worm says, "I'll get you!" after being hit by another worm. | Plays after taking damage from an enemy worm's attack. Same as "Justyouwait.wav" and "youllregretthat.wav". |
Justyouwait.wav | Worm threatens revenge. | Plays after taking damage from an enemy worm's attack. Same as "illgetyou.wav" and "youllregretthat.wav". |
Kamikaze.wav | Worm says, "Kamikaze!" | Plays when Kamikaze or Suicide Bomber is used. |
Laugh.wav | Worm laughs | Plays when animals or drop-and-run weapons are released, on the ground or from the air. |
Leavemealone.wav | Worm says, "Leave me alone" when it is being picked on. | This is never used in Worms Armageddon for some reason. |
Missed.wav | Worm says, "Missed!" | Plays after an enemy worm fires a weapon and fails to deal any damage to any worms. |
Nooo.wav | Phrase when a worm is blasted off the screen. | |
Ohdear.wav | Worm says, "Oh Dear" when dying. | Plays during the death animation. Same as "Byebye.wav". |
Oinutter.wav | Worms says, "Oi! Nutter" when you do something stupid like hitting your own worm. | Plays after an enemy worm uses a weapon and damages itself. Same as "Stupid.wav". |
Ooff1.wav | FX when hitting ground | |
Ooff2.wav | FX when hitting ground. | |
Ooff3.wav | FX when hitting ground. | |
Ow1.wav | When worm is hurt. | Plays when bouncing on flames. |
Ow2.wav | When worm is hurt. | Plays when bouncing on flames. |
Ow3.wav | When worm is hurt. | Plays when bouncing on flames. |
Perfect.wav | Worm says, "Perfect!" when making a great shot. | Unused for the same reason as "Excellent.wav". |
Revenge.wav | Worm says, "Revenge!" | Plays after your worm attacks an enemy worm that damaged them on that enemy worm's previous turn. |
Stupid.wav | Worm says, "Stupid!" when you do something crazy. | Plays after an enemy worm uses a weapon and damages itself. Same as "Oinutter.wav". |
Takecover.wav | Worm says, "Take cover!" when a grenade lands nearby. | Plays when an explosive with a visible countdown is sitting near your worm and one second from exploding. Same as "runaway.wav" and "Whatthe.wav". |
Traitor.wav | Worm says, "Traitor!" when you shoot one of your own. | Plays after your worm makes a move that results in damage to another one of your worms, directly or indirectly. Prioritizes over most other sounds. |
Watchthis.wav | Worm says, "Watch this!" as it fires. | Plays when firing a launchable weapon. Same as "Fire.wav". |
Whatthe.wav | Worm says, "What the..?" as a timed explosive is about to go off. | Plays when an explosive with a visible countdown is sitting near your worm and one second from exploding. Same as "runaway.wav" and "Takecover.wav". |
Yessir.wav | Confirmation phrase. | The beginning of a human team's turn. |
youllregretthat.wav | Worm says, "You'll regret that!" when being hit. | Plays after taking damage from an enemy worm's attack. Same as "illgetyou.wav" and "Justyouwait.wav". |
coward.wav | Phrase when Worm calls you a coward. | Plays after using Skip Go, when a team surrenders, or immediately if a player (not a spectator) machine disconnects; this causes all that machine's teams to surrender automatically. |
amazing.wav | Phrase for an excellent shot. | Unused for the same reason as "Excellent.wav". |
brilliant.wav | Phrase when a worm does something cool. | Unused for the same reason as "Excellent.wav". |
bummer.wav | Worm does something bad. | Plays after one of your worms makes a move that results in damage to itself. Competes with enemy team's "Stupid.wav" and "Oinutter.wav". |
goaway.wav | Used when another worm picks on another. | This is never used in Worms Armageddon for some reason. |
incoming.wav | Phrase when a strike weapon is called. | Plays when your worm uses a strike weapon. Same as "orders.wav". |
oops.wav | Shoot and miss near own worm. | Plays after one of your worms fires a weapon and fails to deal any damage. |
ouch.wav | Fall and hurt yourself. | This is never used in Worms Armageddon for some reason. |
runaway.wav | When an object lands nearby. | Plays when an explosive with a visible countdown is sitting near your worm and one second from exploding. Same as "Takecover.wav" and "Whatthe.wav". |
victory.wav | Sample used when your team wins. | Plays when winning a game having lost at least one worm or energy (not a flawless victory). |
collect.wav | Collect a weapon crate | The "crate pickup" sound is part of this clip, not a separate sound effect. If you want it to play you must include it in "collect.wav". |
drop.wav | When a weapon crate drops. | Used differently between games: In W2, it's used as the description says; in WA (3.6.23+), it's used when a delayed weapon become available; in WWP, it's unused. |
orders.wav | Order strike. | Plays when your worm uses a strike weapon. Same as "incoming.wav". |
Sounds not present in the Soundbank Editor, but used by the game:
- Hurry.wav (Played when turn time is below 5 seconds.)
Some soundbanks include files with misspelled file names (W:A updates have added support for these misspellings):
- Oh Dear, OhDeer → OhDear
- oof1, oof2, oof3 → ooff1, ooff2, ooff3
- UhOh → Uh-Oh
- TakeOver → TakeCover (Russian soundbank, actually mis-translated as "take-over")
Unused sounds
- Hmm.wav
- Surf.wav (Is only shown in American soundbank files)
- Wobble.wav (was intended to be used when being in danger of falling from a high distance, as with the first Worms generation)
- Uh-oh.wav (referenced by the game, but unused by the game engine)
Default soundbanks of WA
Most of these soundbanks are also in WWP, but some were replaced in WWP with replacement sounds of the same language. Those replacements can be found in the next section.
Soundbanks marked with a * are omitted from digital releases of the game. They can be downloaded in a single .zip from Dream17.
