If you are using something other, than Windows for your Operating System (or, heavens forbid, Vista), be it your favorite Linux distro or Mac OSX, that does not mean you are out of luck. You still need a copy of Windows XP, but you won't actually have to install it to a physical partition.

  • on Linux, Wine gives the best performance, as it doesn't have to emulate any hardware and an entire operating system;
  • VirtualBox and VMware Player both show great performance (however, VMware Player is considerably harder to set up);
  • Microsoft Virtual PC offers mediocre performance (gameplay is not smooth, but still playable).
