The Finnish soundbank was originally included in Worms 2. We reached out to the voices behind the soundbank, Jukka O. Kauppinen & Sami Räihä, to tell us about the recording process during the game's development.
Bjørn Lynne, the Team17 audio engineer, knew Jukka & Sami from the Nordic demo scene and thus during development asked them to do the Finnish voices. However after the recording sessions Lynne managed to lose all their work and they had to do it all over again, somehow ending in a funnier final product.
Here's the story in Jukka's own words, taken from email conversations with the permission of both authors, in both original Finnish and translated into English:

Hou! Siinähän on pitkän pitkä tarina. Äänet tehtiin 2 kertaa, koska ekalla kertaa Team 17 äänimies Björn Lynne hukkasi lähettämäni soundit ja taitavana jehuna olin jo poistanut ne. No. Niin. Ekat äänet oli tehty tosi pieteetillä ja huolella, toisen nauhoituksen kanssa mentiinkin sitten toiseen laitaan ja keulittiin. Muistelisin että äänet nauhoitettiin Amiga 1200:lla, olikohan GVP:n DSS8+ äänendigitoija. Toinen äänimies oli Sami Räihä, demoskeneveljeni, joka asui korttelin päässä. Mehän saatiin Team 17:lta tarkat speksit, eli englanninkieliset sheetit mitä sanotaan ja missä tilanteessa äänet tulevat. Eli tarkka ohjeistus, tiedettiin miten äänet tulevat ja visioitiin sitten tilanteita. Ja kun toinen nauhoituskerta oli kerran kyseessä, niin mentiin sitten kunnolla savonkielen ja omaan hölmöilyn ytimeen. Eli meillä oli selkeä ohjeistus mutta saatiin tehdä äänet miten haluttiin ja vedettiin sitten verrattain lonkalta kun päätettiin päästä savolaismato irti. Varsinaisista äänten tekniikkaspekseistä en osaa sanoa, olettaisin että laitettiin varsin hyvälaatuisina Amigan IFF-sampleina.
Suomiääniähän pyysivät minulta, koska olin ollut jo pitkään yhteyksissä Team 17 PR-tyyppeihin, minkä lisäksi olin / olen Björn Lynnen kova fani ja tilailin hänen CD-levyjään. Joten kun keksivät lisätä peliin erikielisiä ääniä, niin heillä oli Suomessa yksi aktiivinen kontakti, jolta kehtasi kysyä palvelusta. Ja tottakai olin heti messissä, samoin Sami. Mitäänhän me ei äänistä saatu mutta oli tosi hauskaa tehdä ne, vaikka hetken vituttikin kun Björn hukkasi ensimmäiset soundit. Ehkä toisaalta suomiäänet eivät olisikaan niin legendaariset. En tosin yhtään muista millaiset ne ekat oli, muuta kuin että niitä oikeasti hiottiin ja tehtiin uusia ottoja :) Kakkosäänet menivät sitten huumori edellä.
Huvittavaa on ollut jälkikäteen bongata miten moni on suomiäänistä tykännyt ja miten sakki putoaa perseelleen kun kuulevat minun ja Samin tehneen ne. Joskus Nokian N-Gage-konsolin aikoihin olin Kanadassa Nokian pressissä ja sillekin oli Worms, tietysti tsekkasin mitä ääniä N-Gage-versiossa oli ja voi että nokialaiset hämmästyivät kun kerroin, että hei, I did this. :) Yks tyyppi totes tuossa pari vuotta sitten, että "lapsuuteni pitää miettiä nyt uusiksi".
Kannatti siis tehdä :)

Hola! Ääntenkäsittelyhän tehtiin briteissä. Sen muistan, että Lynne pyysi ettemme käsittele niitä millään tapaa, hän sitten äänialan ammattilaisena duunasi ne matoäänimuottiin. Minä vain painelin recciä ja leikkasin samplet mittaansa + nimesin speksatulla tapaa. Ehkä jotkut olivat vähän soveltaneet itse nauhoituksiaan tai sitten Lynne oli suomiääniin ehdittäessä jo todennut, että parempi kun hän tekee vain kaiken käsittelyn. En ainakaan muista, että Lynne olisi koskaan lähettänyt ääniä tarkistettavaksi. Samikaan ei muista, että olisi kuullut niistä previkoita eli kuulimme lopputuloksen vasta sitten itse pelistä.
"Nyt se olis täällä, tuutko pelaamaan?!" Sami tuossa muistelee, että soitin hänelle Worms 2:n saapumisesta :)
Onnistuneesti jätin sanomatta MikroBitin arvostelussani omasta osuudestani, ainakin äkkiseltään näin muistelen. Mutta jos katsoo screenshottia (jos nyt muistan että on juuri siitä arvostelusta kyse) niin siellä on suomalaisia demoskene-tyyppejä ja demoryhmiä matojoukkueissa :)
Mutta niin, demoskeneveljen eli Dr. Awesome / Crusaders pyynnöstähän me äänet tehtiin. Awesome eli Björn Lynne oli muuttanut Norjasta Team 17:sta äänimaakariksi. Tähdet olivat oikein.
Ah, Sami tuossa muistaa detaljin:

Eli ihan ekat äänet tehtiin Hazard / Byterapersin kanssa (joka on nykyään Remedyllä). Ne Lynne hukkas. Sitten tehtiin uudet äänet T.o.B / Byterapers eli Sami Räihän kanssa.
Sami hyvin tuossa sanoi, että "jokin kässäri tais olla mutta sitten me semisti improttiin raameihin."
Improttiin raameihin, se on hyvin sanottu.

Jeh, tohdin sanoa että improttiin hyvin kun mä vielä itsekin repeilen näille.

"Yo! Now that's a long story. The sounds were created twice, because on the first time the Team 17 audio guy Bjørn Lynne lost the sounds I had sent and as a talented guy I had already removed them. All. Right. The first sounds were made with utmost piety and care, but during the second session we went in the complete opposite direction and went overboard. As far as I remember the sounds were recorded with an Amiga 1200, a GVP DSS8+ audio digitizer IIRC. The other sound guy was Sami Räihä, a brother from the demo scene who lived one block away. We indeed got detailed specs from Team 17, so sheets in English of what is meant to be said and in which situations the sounds are going to be played. So a detailed set of instructions, we knew how the sounds would fit in the game and we were envisioning different situations. And since it was the second session we went straight into the core of the Savonian dialect and started screwing around. So in other words, we had clear instructions but we could make the sounds however we please and thus we did things impromptu when we wanted to unleash the Savonian worm. Can't say about the actual technical specs of the sounds, I'm assuming they were created as fairly high quality Amiga IFF samples.
And they were asking me for the Finnish sounds because I had already been long in contact with the Team 17 PR guys, and in addition to that I was/am a big fan of Bjørn Lynne and I was ordering his CDs from time to time. So when they came up with the idea of adding sounds in different languages, they had one active contact in Finland, who they dared to ask for the favor. And of course I was in from the get-go, Sami as well. We didn't get paid for the sounds but it was a ton of fun making them, even though for a moment we were pissed off when Bjørn lost the first sounds. But in hindsight if that hadn't happened the Finnish soundbank probably wouldn't be so legendary. Though I don't remember at all what the first sounds were like other than that we really polished them and took multiple takes :) The second session was driven by humor.
It has been amusing to see afterwards how many have liked the Finnish soundbank and how people are floored when they hear that me and Sami created it. Way back during the Nokia N-Gage console years I was doing press work for Nokia and that device also had Worms, of course I checked out which sounds the N-Gage version had and oh boy were the Nokia guys surprised when I told them that "hey, I did this" :) One guy told me a couple years ago that "they need to rethink their childhood now"
So it was definitely worth doing :)

Hello! Audio editing was actually done in the UK. I do remember that Lynne asked us not to process them in any way, and he as an audio professional would edit them into the worm form. I was just pressing the record key and cut the samples into the right size + gave them the specified names. Perhaps some had done it in their own style or Lynne had already thought when he got to the Finnish sounds that it'd be for the better if he did the processing himself. I at least don't remember that Lynne had ever sent the sounds to be checked. Sami doesn't remember hearing previews either so we heard the finished product only when the game came out.
"It's here now, will you come play?" Sami remembers me calling him when Worms 2 came out. :)
IIRC I successfully failed to mention in my MikroBitti (Finnish computer mag) review about my part in the game. But if you look at the screenshot (if it's the correct review I'm remembering) there's some names from the Finnish demo scene in the worm teams. :)
But yeah, we did the Finnish soundbank by request of our demo scene brother Dr. Awesome / Crusaders. Awesome, AKA Bjørn Lynne, had moved from Norway to work as the Team 17 audio lead. The stars were aligned. Ah, Sami remembers a detail:

So the first sounds we made with Hazard from Byterapers (who's now working at Remedy). Those Lynne lost somewhere. Then we made the new sounds with Sami Räihä (T.o.B from Byterapers). Sami said it well just now that "I guess we had a script of sorts but then we improvised a bit into the frame".

Yeah, I could say that we improvised quite well when I'm still bursting out laughing at these.
